NYANDENI — Government has handed over 239 new houses to families in Nyandeni Local Municipality.
The handover forms part of efforts to reduce the housing backlog in the O.R. Tambo District. The new homes will give families better and safer places to live.
Families Receive New Homes
The Department of Human Settlements hosted the handover ceremony with the O.R. Tambo District Municipality.
Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements Siphokazi Lusithi led the ceremony. She said the government’s housing programme aims to give families more than just a roof over their heads.
According to Lusithi, decent housing can restore hope, stability and dignity in communities.
Officials selected the beneficiaries from the housing waiting list. Many of the families had waited for years to receive homes.
60-Year-Old Beneficiary Celebrates
One of the beneficiaries, 60-year-old Gwama Nosakhe Buzani, received a new home after years of waiting.
Buzani’s happiness highlighted the difference that decent housing can make in people’s lives.
The O.R. Tambo District Municipality welcomed the handover. The municipality said the project shows its commitment to improving housing delivery across the district.
Furthermore, officials say the programme will help reduce the housing backlog. Government also aims to give more deserving families access to safe and decent homes.
