The ANC Veterans League is calling for stronger action from law enforcement following violent clashes involving March and March supporters and foreign nationals in Durban.
The organisation says police must act quickly to prevent further violence. It also wants authorities to investigate allegations of attacks, looting and unlawful evictions.
Clashes outside Home Affairs
The incident happened outside the Department of Home Affairs offices on Che Guevara Road in eThekwini on 3 September 2026.
According to the ANC Veterans League, about 100 March and March supporters took part in what they called a “clean-up campaign” targeting foreign nationals staying outside the Home Affairs offices.
The organisation says tensions later turned violent. It reports that monitors and activists were attacked during the incident.
Police responded by using rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray.
Call for proactive policing
The ANC Veterans League wants law enforcement agencies to take a more proactive approach.
It is calling for:
- More visible and preventative policing.
- Proper investigations into alleged killings, looting and unlawful evictions.
- An end to unlawful identity checks and raids on homes and businesses.
- Action against organisers where hate speech is involved.
- Police to remain neutral when dealing with community tensions.
The organisation says no individual, organisation or political movement should take the law into its own hands.
Warning over xenophobia
The Veterans League has also warned that unchecked attacks against foreign nationals could lead to other South Africans being targeted because of their race, ethnicity, nationality or identity.
It says documented foreign nationals should be supported and integrated into communities.
The organisation is urging ANC members to defend foreign nationals against vigilante groups and support peaceful communities.
The ANC Veterans League says decisive action is needed to prevent further violence, xenophobia and vigilantism.
