Carletonville Tavern Shooting: 17 Killed and 15 Injured in Wedela

WEDELA, GAUTENG — 27 September 2026 — Gunmen have killed 17 people and seriously injured 15 others during a shooting at a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville on the West Rand.

The shooting happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police say the victims included 13 men and four women.

According to police, the gunmen arrived at the tavern while people were drinking inside and outside the premises. They first opened fire on people outside before entering the tavern and continuing to shoot.

The suspects reportedly used AK-47 rifles and handguns during the attack.

Emergency medical teams responded to the scene. However, paramedics declared 17 people dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, medical teams took 15 injured people to hospital for treatment.

Police have now launched a manhunt for the suspects. Detectives and other specialised police units are working to establish where the suspects went after the shooting.

Police have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack.

The investigation is continuing. Police are also working to identify the victims and gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
