The Democratic Alliance (DA) has challenged South Africa’s Expropriation Act in the Western Cape High Court. The party says the law could threaten property rights and reduce investor confidence.
On Monday, the DA announced that it had launched the court case to protect the constitutional rights of property owners. According to the party, secure property rights help attract investment, grow the economy and create jobs.
The DA also said it supports meaningful land reform. However, it believes land reform should expand property ownership instead of weakening ownership rights. The party argues that government should not receive excessive powers to take property.
Furthermore, the DA said a future DA-led national government would focus on entrepreneurship, investment and job creation. It wants South Africans to own property, start businesses and build wealth.
The legal challenge comes as the national debate over land reform continues. The debate focuses on how South Africa can address historical land inequalities while protecting property rights.
In addition, the DA urged eligible voters to check their registration details before the voters’ roll closes. The party encouraged South Africans to take part in the democratic process.
The court case is expected to become a key part of the DA’s campaign ahead of the upcoming elections.
