EASTERN CAPE – A young innovator from Nxamkwana village near Mdantsane is making South Africa proud.
Elihle (24) is a final-year Computer Science student at Nelson Mandela University. He recently presented his AI-powered smart glasses at the Leap East Conference in Hong Kong. The invention impressed investors and technology experts. As a result, Elihle was named among the Top 150 innovators worldwide.
Inspired by his grandmother
Elihle created the smart glasses because his grandmother is visually impaired. He wanted to make daily life easier for people who cannot see well.
The glasses help users detect obstacles. They also recognise objects and assist with navigation. In addition, they support communication in South African languages. Therefore, the technology is useful for local communities.
