EASTERN CAPE – The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has reopened all mountain passes after snowfall eased across the province on Tuesday morning.
Heavy snow forced authorities to close several mountain routes on Monday. However, conditions improved overnight and traffic is moving again.
The department warned that many roads remain wet and slippery. Therefore, motorists should drive carefully and reduce their speed.
Penhoek Pass remains hazardous
The Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Komani and James Calata still has thick fog and light drizzle. As a result, visibility is poor and driving conditions remain difficult.
Cold and wet weather continues
Meanwhile, low-lying areas near the coast continue to experience cold weather, steady rain and mist. Drivers should keep a safe following distance and switch on their headlights.
The department reported no major weather-related crashes overnight. It also thanked road users for their patience and cooperation during the severe winter weather.
Officials urged motorists to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel through affected areas where possible.
