The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it will open a criminal case of fraud against Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane.
This comes after the Makhanda High Court ruled against Mabuyane on Tuesday, finding that he had irregularly obtained admission to a Master of Administration programme at the University of Fort Hare despite not meeting the minimum requirements.
The court also set aside the qualification and ordered that it be removed from the university’s records.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the EFF said the criminal case relates to allegations that Mabuyane fraudulently enrolled for the Master’s programme and later attempted to gain admission to the university’s PhD programme while claiming to hold the qualification.
The party said the case will be opened at the KuGompo Police Station in East London on Thursday, 25 June 2026, at 10:00.
The EFF maintains that legal action is necessary following the court ruling and has called for law enforcement authorities to investigate the matter.Mabuyane has previously denied wrongdoing.
The opening of a criminal case does not imply guilt, and any allegations will be subject to investigation by the relevant authorities.
