Five people face charges after an AB350 bus attack in Dutywa on Tuesday.

The bus travelled from Willowvale to Dutywa. It came under attack in the Dutywa area.

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Community Safety, the attackers allegedly threw stones at the bus. They also allegedly assaulted the driver.

The attackers then allegedly took about R3,500 from the driver. They later set the bus alight.

Passengers flee to safety

About 40 passengers were on the bus during the attack.

As the situation became dangerous, passengers ran to nearby homes. Some passengers also escaped by jumping from the bus.

The driver and one passenger suffered minor injuries. Medical teams treated both of them.

Meanwhile, police remained at the scene.

They then received a report about another AB350 bus. According to the department, taxi members allegedly chased the second bus.

Police quickly responded to the report. Officers found the bus safe and escorted it from the area.

Meeting planned after violence

The Eastern Cape Department of Community Safety says authorities will meet with the affected parties.

The meeting aims to find a long-term solution to the dispute.

Meanwhile, Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has condemned the violence.

Nqatha has also called on all parties to use dialogue to resolve their differences.
