
Five people die in early morning collision
Five people have been killed and one person has been critically injured following a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Polo and a Renault on the N2 near Mooiplaas, just outside KuGompo City, in the Eastern Cape.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the crash occurred at approximately 7:00am on Tuesday.
Vehicle catches fire after impact
The department said the Renault caught fire on impact, leaving the driver burnt beyond recognition. The deceased driver is believed to have been a teacher at Qumrha Primary School.
Meanwhile, four occupants travelling in the Volkswagen Polo, comprising one man and three women, also lost their lives in the collision.
The only survivor sustained critical injuries and was transported to a hospital in KuGompo City for emergency medical treatment.
N2 closed as investigation continues
Rescue, recovery and crash investigation teams remain at the scene. As a result, the N2 has been completely closed to traffic.
Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes while emergency services continue their work.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
Department sends condolences
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died. The department also wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.
