LIBODE, EASTERN CAPE – A 23-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of her 32-year-old boyfriend in Ziphunzana locality, Libode, in the OR Tambo District.
According to the South African Police Service, the incident occurred on Sunday, 26 July 2026, at approximately 14:00.
Argument over missing grant money
Police allege that the woman discovered money she had received through a government grant had been withdrawn from her bank account. She allegedly accused her boyfriend of taking the money, which led to an argument between the couple.
During the confrontation, the boyfriend allegedly assaulted the woman repeatedly. It is alleged that she retaliated by grabbing a knife and stabbing him.
The injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Murder charge
The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident by Libode police. She appeared before the Libode Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, on a charge of murder.
The matter was postponed to Thursday, 30 July 2026, to allow for a formal bail application.
Police condemn the incident
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, condemned the incident, describing it as a tragic reminder of the consequences of violence in resolving domestic disputes.
“It is a very unfortunate situation that the two had to resort to violence in addressing their squabble. People must learn to solve their misunderstandings through peaceful means so as to reach an amicable solution,” said Major General Modishana.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing are continuing.
