PARYS, FREE STATE – Police arrested an IT specialist in Parys, Free State, for allegedly taking part in a multi-million rand NaTIS fraud syndicate.
Intelligence Operation
Crime Intelligence gathered information about the suspect before the arrest. Police believe he operated the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) from his private residence.
Investigators say he helped vehicle owners renew licences illegally.
Officials Named
After his arrest, the suspect allegedly identified former transport department officials, current NaTIS users, and officials from the National Department of Transport.
According to police, he claimed that corrupt officials sold system login details. He also alleged that the information was transferred using memory sticks.
Network Across Provinces
Furthermore, the suspect claimed the group operates in the Free State and southern Gauteng.
He also alleged that members can access NaTIS across South Africa by using credentials supplied by their contacts.
In addition, the group reportedly targets Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) that do not use biometric verification.
Roadworthy Fraud Alleged
Police say the suspect also claimed the syndicate has access to Private Vehicle Testing Station credentials.
As a result, members allegedly capture vehicle information and falsely declare vehicles roadworthy on the NaTIS system.
Investigation Continues
Meanwhile, investigators are working to verify the information provided by the suspect.
Police have not ruled out further arrests. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
