Court Hears Testimony from Accused Number Two
LUSIKISIKI – Aphiwe Ndende, accused number two in the Ngobozana massacre trial, told the court that he regrets taking part in the attack that killed 18 people in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.
The Mthatha High Court sitting in Lusikisiki heard his testimony on Wednesday. Defence attorney Velile Mgcotyelwa questioned Ndende on behalf of accused number five, Songezo Vuma.
Ndende and his five co-accused face several charges. These include 19 counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Ndende Says Fear Drove His Actions
During questioning, Ndende said fear drove him to shoot some of the victims. He told the court that he feared Vuma because Vuma had spoken about killing people who failed to follow his instructions.
Furthermore, Ndende claimed that Vuma followed instructions from accused number one, Mzukisi Ndamase. Prosecutors allege that Ndamase planned the killings.
Ndende Admits He Shot Four People
Ndende admitted that he shot four people during the massacre. However, he told the court that he deeply regrets his actions. He also said he feels remorse for helping carry out an attack that killed many people.
Meanwhile, Mgcotyelwa continued questioning Ndende about his version of events.
Trial Continues on Thursday
The court adjourned after Wednesday’s proceedings. Mgcotyelwa will continue questioning Ndende on Thursday.
