A Spring Day celebration in Refilwe, Cullinan, Gauteng, ended in tragedy on Tuesday.
A 21-year-old man was allegedly stabbed during an argument linked to water-splashing activities.
Argument breaks out during Spring Day celebration
According to police, young people were celebrating Spring Day by splashing water on pedestrians and motorists.
However, the celebration soon turned into an argument.
Police said the group tried to splash water on a 53-year-old man. He allegedly did not want to take part in the activity.
As a result, an argument broke out between the man and the group.
During the argument, the 53-year-old man allegedly stabbed one of the young people.
The 21-year-old victim suffered serious injuries. Sadly, he was later declared dead at the scene.
Suspect arrested after community members intervene
Meanwhile, community members reportedly caught the suspect after he left the scene.
The group allegedly assaulted him before police arrived.
Police then took the suspect to a local clinic for medical treatment. After receiving treatment, he was arrested.
The suspect is facing a murder charge.
He is expected to appear in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court.
Police warn against taking the law into their own hands
In addition, police have warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.
Police say criminal cases must be handled through the proper legal process.
The investigation into the stabbing is continuing.
