South Africans who still need to register to vote or update their voting details have until the end of today to do so, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) says.
Today is the final day of the national voter registration weekend ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections. Therefore, the IEC has urged eligible citizens to register before voting stations close this evening.
Voting stations across the country opened this morning. They are helping people register for the first time, update their residential addresses, and confirm their details on the national voters’ roll.
In addition, the IEC has encouraged young people, first-time voters, and anyone who has moved to another voting district to use this final registration opportunity.
According to the commission, registration is a legal requirement for voting in South Africa. As a result, anyone who misses today’s deadline will not be able to vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Previously, IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo called on South Africans to participate in the registration process. He said strong voter participation strengthens local democracy and promotes accountable government.
Meanwhile, the IEC continues its preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections, which are expected to take place later this year.
Finally, the commission reminded voters to visit their designated voting stations before registration closes today. Once the voters’ roll closes, the IEC will not accept any new registrations or address changes for the election.
