TSOLO JUNCTION, EASTERN CAPE — Former mineworkers and their families gathered at Tsolo Junction Hall on Thursday.
The visit forms part of the second phase of the Ex-Mineworkers Claims outreach programme.
Former mineworkers seek assistance
The outreach runs under the Thubalethu Project. It helps former mineworkers follow up on claims and benefits linked to their time in the mining sector.
Many beneficiaries arrived early at the hall. Long queues formed as residents waited for help with their claims.
Officials are helping former mineworkers check outstanding claims. They are also helping residents find out if they qualify for payments or other benefits.
Government brings services closer
The Eastern Cape Office of the Premier is leading the outreach with several partners.
The programme aims to bring government services closer to communities. It also helps eligible former mineworkers access benefits that may be due to them.
Several government departments and organisations are taking part in the outreach.
These include the Office of the Premier, Department of Health and Department of Employment and Labour.
Other organisations are also providing support at the venue.

TEBA, the South African Ex-Mineworkers Council (SAEC) and African Bank are among the organisations taking part.
Residents can access information and assistance at one location. Officials can also guide them through the claims process.
The outreach serves residents from the Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality area.
The initiative brings different stakeholders together to assist former mineworkers. It also aims to make it easier for residents to access government services.
