Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi will lead the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation’s annual Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) Awareness Walk in East London later this month.
The foundation announced that Tunzi will deliver the keynote address during the event. The walk will take place on Saturday, 15 August 2026, at 7:00 am at Beacon Bay Country Club in Beacon Bay, East London.
The foundation holds the event every year in memory of Uyinene Mrwetyana, who was murdered in 2019. Since then, the awareness walk has become an important platform for remembrance, advocacy, and action against gender-based violence and femicide.
This year’s theme is “From Awareness to Action: Building Communities That Protect.” The foundation wants communities, government, schools, universities, businesses, faith-based organisations, and law enforcement agencies to work together. The goal is to create safer communities for women, children, and other vulnerable groups.
Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation Managing Director Thobeka Msengana said South Africa can end GBVF only through a united effort. She said every sector of society has a role to play in protecting vulnerable people and supporting survivors.
During the event, Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi will speak about leadership, community action, and active citizenship. She will also discuss practical ways that communities can help prevent gender-based violence.
Participants will first attend a memorial programme with moments of reflection and artistic performances. After that, they will join a symbolic 5 km walk to show solidarity with survivors, families, and communities affected by GBVF.
