Pretoria – South Africa has ordered an Israeli diplomat to leave. He must go within 72 hours.
Accordingly, the diplomat is Mr Ariel Seidman. He serves as Israel’s Chargé d’Affaires.
Meanwhile, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, or DIRCO, confirmed the move on Friday. Notably, DIRCO informed the Israeli government.
Rules Were Broken
According to DIRCO, the decision follows rule breaches. In short, these acts harmed South Africa’s authority.
For example, Israeli state social media posted insults. Specifically, the posts targeted President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In addition, the embassy failed to alert DIRCO about visits. As required, such notice must come before visits.
Serious Breach
Furthermore, DIRCO said the acts abused diplomatic privilege. Likewise, they broke the Vienna Convention.
As a result, trust between the two states fell. Consequently, normal ties suffered.
Order to Leave
Therefore, DIRCO ordered Mr Seidman to leave within 72 hours. Clearly, South Africa’s dignity must be respected.
Meanwhile, South Africa urged Israel to respect the rules. Finally, it called for proper conduct in future talks.
In conclusion, DIRCO spokesperson Crispin Phiri confirmed the stance.
