Police have confirmed the arrest of a 72-year-old man accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in Peddie. The case is expected back in court on 11 November 2026.

A 72-year-old man accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in Peddie has been granted bail of R1,000. The State first opposed his release. However, it later decided not to oppose bail.

Community Member Raises Concerns

ECNewsLive contacted the authorities after a community member raised concerns about the case. The person alleged that the accused owns a driving school in Peddie. The community member also claimed that he is the girl’s grandfather.

ECNewsLive contacted Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson Captain Majola Nkohli. The publication also sought comment from Eastern Cape NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.

Police Confirm Arrest

Nkohli confirmed the man’s arrest. He said the alleged rape took place on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

According to Nkohli, the accused was driving with the girl in his vehicle. He allegedly stopped in a secluded area and raped her.

The girl later told her grandmother about the incident. Her grandmother reported it to the police on 3 October 2026. Police arrested the accused two days later.

NPA Explains Bail Decision

The accused first appeared in court on 6 October. The court postponed the case for a formal bail application. The application took place on 12 October.

Tyali told ECNewsLive that the State first opposed bail. However, it later changed its position after hearing the views of the girl and her guardian.

Tyali said both had no objection to the accused receiving bail. The investigating officer recorded their views in an affidavit after consulting them.

The State also asked the accused for another address. Officials checked and confirmed the address. Tyali said the State believes the accused has moved there as the court instructed.

The court granted bail of R1,000.

The accused faces a rape charge involving a minor. The charge falls under Schedule 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

When Is the Next Court Date?

The case will return to court on 11 November 2026 for further proceedings.

The accused remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
