The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape says it has learnt “with shock” of the alleged removal of Cllr Cebisa Mazuza as mayor of PSJ Local Municipality, and has condemned the move in the strongest terms.
In a statement issued on 14 October 2026, the party’s Provincial Executive Committee said the act was not sanctioned by any ANC structure.
It said there was no consultation of any kind, and that no deployment or redeployment processes were followed. It described the alleged removal as “an act of ill discipline”.
The ANC said its members should be at work across the province campaigning for the 2026 local government elections.
It said they should not be distracted by petty disputes over positions of responsibility.
“Our people need service,” the party said, adding that basic service delivery should be an apex priority for all ANC deployees.
It said the movement must rebuild its relationship with communities, admit its setbacks, remind voters of its gains and recommit to being the “beacon of hope” for South Africans.
The party said it will follow developments closely and apply corrective measures. It stressed that communities need stability, accountability and efficiency.
The statement was issued by ANC Eastern Cape provincial spokesperson Yanga Zicina.
