The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) says it has taken note of the findings delivered by the Magistrate’s Court in the Enyobeni Tavern inquest, which investigated the tragedy that claimed the lives of 21 young people in Scenery Park, East London.
In a media statement issued on Friday, the Board acknowledged the significance of the Court’s findings and extended its heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and communities who continue to live with the devastating impact of the incident.
The ECLB said it is currently conducting a thorough assessment of the Court’s findings, including their legal and operational implications. According to the Board, this process is necessary to ensure that any decisions it takes are informed, responsible and fully aligned with the applicable legal framework.
“The Eastern Cape Liquor Board remains firmly committed to the principles of accountability, transparency and good governance,” the statement said.
The Board added that it will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities and will act in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of South Africa.
The ECLB further indicated that it will communicate its official position and any future course of action once it has completed its assessment of the judgment.
In the meantime, the Board appealed to members of the public to allow the legal and administrative processes to unfold and to refrain from speculation while these processes are underway.
The Enyobeni Tavern tragedy, which occurred in June 2022, shocked the nation and prompted widespread calls for greater accountability and stricter enforcement of liquor regulations. The inquest findings mark an important step in efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the 21 young victims.
