Eastern Cape Police Arrest 229 During Province-Wide Protests
Eastern Cape police say 229 people were arrested on Tuesday as 28 marches took place across the province.
According to police, 208 of those arrested were undocumented foreign nationals, while 21 were arrested for crimes related to the protests.
Police said the largest marches were held in Bizana, Lusikisiki, Flagstaff and Mthatha, with most remaining peaceful. However, officers responded to incidents reported in KwaNompumelelo, Duncan Village, Ducats, Bizana and Lusikisiki.
Police said some of the arrests were linked to the looting of spaza shops in Bhisho, Tabankulu and Stutterheim. Other arrests included fraud, attempted robbery and incitement to commit violence.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata said police would continue to act against anyone involved in criminal activities and that operations would remain in place across the province.
