The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has urged the MK Party and the March and March movement to stop harassing journalists.
The call follows criticism aimed at Business Day political editor Hajra Omarjee. She recently reported on discussions about possible unrest linked to anti-migrant protests.
However, the MK Party denied any link between its leader, former president Jacob Zuma, and any potential unrest. The party said Zuma has always promoted peace and lawful political action.
Meanwhile, SANEF defended the role of journalists. The organisation said reporters have the right to investigate and publish stories that are in the public interest. It also warned against intimidation and attacks on media workers
Furthermore, SANEF urged political parties to use official complaint channels if they disagree with media reports. According to the organisation, these channels are the proper way to address concerns.
In addition, SANEF raised concerns about reports of journalists being harassed while covering anti-immigration protests. These incidents were reported in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
Finally, SANEF said a free and independent media is essential for democracy. The organisation called on political leaders and supporters to respect press freedom and end threats against journalists.
