
Johannesburg – Sonke Gender Justice has criticised the alleged conduct of AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini after a viral video showed a heated exchange with Queen Nomzamo Myeni.
Viral Video Sparks Concern
The organisation said the incident highlights South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis. It added that abuse should never be treated as a private family matter.
Sonke Calls for Accountability
Sonke welcomed the King’s statement expressing regret over his remarks. However, the organisation said he should also apologise directly to Queen Nomzamo Myeni.
Co-Executive Director Bafana Khumalo said there is no excuse for threats, intimidation or abusive language in relationships.
South Africa’s GBV Crisis Continues
According to the Human Sciences Research Council, more than 35% of South African women have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Many of these cases involve intimate partners.
Sonke said the incident is a reminder that the fight against gender-based violence remains one of South Africa’s biggest challenges.
