The Somali Association of South Africa has assured residents that Somali-owned businesses in Johannesburg will remain open despite planned demonstrations against undocumented foreign nationals.
The association said the majority of Somali traders are legally documented and have the necessary permits to live and operate businesses in South Africa. It stressed that its members comply with the country’s laws and remain committed to serving their communities.
According to the association, Somali-owned shops play an important role in many neighbourhoods by supplying affordable groceries and other essential goods while also contributing to the economy through business activities and employment.
The association has appealed for peaceful demonstrations and urged the public not to target legally documented foreign nationals.
It said lawful business owners should not be affected by actions aimed at addressing illegal immigration.
Somali traders in areas including Mayfair and the Johannesburg CBD have indicated that they will continue operating as usual, saying they remain committed to serving the communities that rely on their services.
